I think today I'll share with you my little trip to buy a very much needed new bed...
I do like to keep my business 'local' if I can and help to keep local businesses very much alive, so I sauntered down to the bed shop about 10 mins walk from me, with an idea of the kind of bed i needed, the salesman immediately pounced on me and aksed "can I help you madam?" I said I needed a new bed, he said have I certain type in mind, to which I replied "oh yes"...I told him I didn't want a divan I needed one with a headboard and footboard, he then showed me all the ones which fitted that criteria...a lovely 'sleigh' bed in pine which if I hadn't got my 'ideal bed' in mind I would have loved... I told him that I needed a bed with 'spindles' in the head and footboards...I couldn't think of the right word for what i meant but he seemed to understand! He then showed me a bed with spindles which was lovely, he insisted I try it for comfort...told him the mattress was just how i like it, nice and hard...he thought he'd found me 'THE' bed...but the footboard was as high as the headboard...I told him I needeed the footboard to be at just above mattress height, he gave me a confused look...I explained that I like to get on the bed from the bottom (which I sometimes do...but if you've been to spend time with me you'll know why!)
So he proceeded to take me to another bed which he kept telling me "it's a Laura Ashley" like it was mean to impress me...I've no love for Laura Ashley, all the flowery chintzy material...so i told him it doesn't matter who makes the bed as long as it's what i need...he then asked me "is the bed for everyday or occasional use madam?"...hmmm...I decded that I probably would never be buying a bed from here again so I'd have a bit of fun..I answered "it's for everyday HEAVY use." At this point the man went bright red and ushered me to what he said was the last bed he could think of that might meet my needs...and he proceeded to tell me this was also made by Laura Ashley...the bed, although not to my normal taste in beds as it's quite 'ornate' was perfect...again I tried it for comfort, but I preferred the last mattress, he said he would give me a good price (already told him I was paying cash) on a different mattress, he looked at me and asked if this was any good...I said yes it was as it had 'knobs' on each of the four corners...he again looking puzzled, asked me why I liked the knobs (wouldn't you think he'd have learned by now??) I told him I liked them so I can use them to tie my silk scarves round so I can tie people up...I think at this point he was so flummoxed (is that just a word we use in Yorkshire?) that he said he would go and work out a price for me...he came back and told me the price...lets just say I think the poor guy was so flustered he'd made a boob (no, not as big as mine!) and he quoted me £380, which I knew immediately was wrong as the bed was nearly £500 and the mattress extra...so goodness knows how he came to that quote but I snapped it up and paid him the cash and the bed is being delivered on Saturday morning...whooooo hooooo!
